[1:39]  1 tn Heb “the horn of oil.” This has been specified as olive oil in the translation for clarity.

[1:39]  sn A horn filled with oil. An animal’s horn was used as an oil flask in the anointing ceremony.

[1:39]  2 tn Or “anointed.”

[3:3]  3 tn Heb “Solomon loved the Lord by walking in.”

[3:3]  4 tn Or “policies, rules.”

[3:4]  5 tn Heb “for it was the great high place.”

[3:4]  6 tn The verb form is an imperfect, which is probably used here in a customary sense to indicate continued or repeated action in past time. See GKC 314 §107.b.

[3:5]  7 tn Or “revealed himself.”

[3:5]  8 tn Heb “ask.”

[9:8]  9 tn Heb “and this house will be high [or elevated].” The statement makes little sense in this context, which predicts the desolation that judgment will bring. Some treat the clause as concessive, “Even though this temple is lofty [now].” Others, following the lead of several ancient versions, emend the text to, “this temple will become a heap of ruins.”

[9:8]  10 tn Heb “hiss,” or perhaps “whistle.” This refers to a derisive sound one would make when taunting an object of ridicule.

[11:28]  11 tn Heb “man of strength.”

[11:28]  12 tn Heb “house.”

[18:40]  13 tn Or “slaughtered.”

[22:38]  14 tn Heb “now the prostitutes bathed.”

[22:38]  15 tn Heb “according to the word of the Lord which he spoke.”

[22:48]  16 tn Heb “a fleet of Tarshish [ships].” This probably refers to large ships either made in or capable of traveling to the distant western port of Tarshish.
